Whenever I’ve moved in the past, my main priority hasn’t been to find a new doctor, dentist, or optometrist, oh no. First and foremost, I’m always on the lookout for a new salon. The real drag, though, is when you have to find a new salon once you’ve found an established one, because it starts going downhill or the stylists you like start to leave. There are lots of reasons you might need to make a switch, and here are the main signs that you need to find a new salon.

1. Outdated Equipment
One sure sign that you need to find a new salon is the use of outdated equipment. The equipment a salon and its individual stylists use is incredibly important. Hair dryers, curling and straightening irons, and so on, need to be kept in good shape, and sometimes they need to be updated. If the equipment in your salon is constantly breaking down, you might want to find a new place.
2. Frequent Turnover of Stylists
Whether you go to an exclusive salon, a local place, or a chain like Super Cuts, you’re apt to see a big turnover. It happens at just about every salon, and for the most part, it’s completely normal. However, when a different stylist has left every time you visit the place, that’s a big sign that you need to find a new salon. There may be a reason so many stylists leave – and that may be a reason for you to leave, too.
Frequently asked questions
3. No Communication
If you aren’t getting a lot of communication from the people who work in the salon, that can be a big warning sign as well. Maybe the receptionist doesn’t take down your information correctly. Perhaps the stylists don’t really pay attention to what you say you want done. The employees may not communicate with each other. Either way, you want to be in a place where people listen, otherwise you might end up with a hair catastrophe.
4. Dated Styles
Have you ever been to a salon where everyone comes out with really dated hairstyles? That’s the worst. Above all, it’s good to go a salon that stays current. You want to go to a place where all the stylists are up on the latest trends and techniques. They should be able to do everything, whether it’s a retro look or something new and trendy.
5. Dirty Tools
Ever since watching Tabatha’s Salon Takeover, I’ve been keeping an eye out on the tools in the salon I frequent. You should do the same, because the way the stylists treat their tools tells you a lot about the salon itself. You definitely don’t want to go somewhere that has dust in the corners and on the products or, worse, lots of hair gummed up in the brushes and combs. Gross!

6. Mismanagement
Mismanagement is definitely a sign that you need to find a new salon. There are many ways to spot mismanagement, you just have to pay attention while you’re there. If there’s a lot of fighting on the floor, a lot of appointment snafus, and things of that nature, you’re better off going somewhere else.
7. Poor Products
Salons make a lot of money selling the products they have displayed. You should pay attention to those as well, even if you don’t buy them. If they’ve had items sitting on their shelves forever, if they have products that have been discontinued, or if they don’t have a lot of new innovations, you may want to be careful. If they’re selling poor products, then you have to wonder what they’re putting on your hair.
As you can see, there are many signs that you need to find a new salon. You can never be too careful, even with your hair. What’s your idea of an ideal hair salon?
