1 Eggs & Dairy
I know eggs and dairy get a bad rap, but they’re both foods that prevent hair loss! If you don’t have any dietary restrictions, try adding some more dairy products like low-fat yogurt, skim milk and eggs to your meals. Eggs and dairy products are great sources of vitamin A and B12, which can help produce sebum. Sebum is an oil that our bodies produce to lubricate our skin and hair.
Frequently asked questions
2 Swiss Chard
Swiss chard is one of the foods that fight hair loss that I’ve yet to try. It’s a leafy, green vegetable with colorful stems that is a powerhouse of nutrition! Some of the nutrients it contains include vitamins A, C and K, as well as magnesium, potassium and iron. Swiss chard also contains biotin, which is a water soluble B vitamin that helps in the maintenance of your hair and nails and has been known to stimulate new growth!
3 Flaxseeds
Flaxseed is one of the newer foods that people are buzzing about. It contains fiber, iron, lignans and omega-3 fatty acids, which can be helpful in halting hair loss. Omega-3s and iron are both known to be great for our hair, as they can support a healthy scalp and can even stimulate hair growth! Try sprinkling some flaxseeds on salads or yogurt, or you can try flaxmeal or flax oil in salads and salad dressing.
4 Shrimp
One of my favorite foods that fight hair loss is shrimp! Shrimp contains zinc, which is another one of the nutrients that is important in preventing hair loss and thinning hair. Proceed with caution though, because you don’t want to overdo it on the zinc, which can cause hair loss from potentially increased testosterone. But if you stick to the recommended daily amount of 11 milligrams, you’ll be fine! It’s really easy to incorporate shrimp into your meals, just add it to salads or pasta and it really elevates the dish!
5 Nuts
I love eating nuts as a snack because they contain good fats, fiber and vitamin E. In addition to being a healthy snack, nuts are also one of the foods that prevent hair loss! Think about adding some almonds, peanuts and walnuts as your afternoon snack, or make some trail mix using these nuts. These nuts contains omega-3s and zinc, both of which are known for decreasing hair shedding and promoting healthy hair!
6 Garbanzo Beans
Garbanzo beans or chickpeas are so underrated! Not only do they taste good, they’re also filled with vitamins and minerals that are great for digestive health, lowering cholesterol, reducing blood pressure and they're great for our hair! These beans are chock full of protein and folate, which are key to a head of lustrous, strong hair! Add some garbanzo beans to your salad or bake them for a savory treat!
7 Chicken
Eating chicken is my favorite way to get protein. It’s lean, helps prevents bone loss, is great for heart health, supports strong teeth and bones, boosts the metabolism and immune function and promotes healthy eyes. But since we’re talking about preventing hair loss here, eating chicken is crucial in keeping hair strong and healthy! Strive to eat a serving a day of lean protein like chicken, fish or soy products!
Changing what we eat and how we eat it can really make a big difference in how we look and feel! If your current diet is made up of a lot of processed foods, try incorporating more of these seven foods into your diet to help your body grow and maintain beautiful hair! Do you know of any other healthy hair foods?
