Hair care secrets are fun to learn because they give me something new to try when I wash and style my locks. It can be wonderful to hear what works for other people too, because it might be something you never considered before. No matter what type or length of hair you have, there are sure to be more than one or two hair care secrets you can try today. My list by no means covers them all, but it does contain some gems worth trying. Feel free to share your secrets with me.
1. Give Your Hair a Day off
That’s right, your tresses need a break and giving them one is one of the most effortless hair care secrets I can give you. Take one day a week off from the heat styling and piling on the products. A natural look is fun and great for laid-back days eating out or hanging at the park with your kids or friends. A hair care break is a great idea for any day of the week too. If you have the day off from work or school, give your locks the day off too. That time spend away from products and heat can really help keep your hair from getting dry, brittle and broken.
2. Take Vitamins
There are several nutrients that support healthy, shiny and all around gorgeous hair, so they are definitely something you should include in your routine. Protein is absolutely vital for your hair, so make sure you’re getting enough. Opt for lean sources to keep your fat and calorie intake under control. Good choices include sirloin steak, chicken breasts, fish, beans, eggs and nuts. A B complex supplement and vitamin E are also ideal choices for your tresses.
3. Look for Oils in Your Hair Products
No, they won’t leave your hair greasy. What they will do is infuse your strands with healthy nutrients that do a wide range of jobs, including strengthening your hair. They can also make it shinier, more radiant and above all, super healthy. Experts recommend jojoba, almond, argan, olive and coconut oils. You can also apply them directly to your hair in the form of a mask for mega benefits. Let them sit for several minutes, then wash with warm water and mild shampoo.
4. Use a Satin Pillowcase
You’ve probably heard that this is good for your skin because it helps prevent smooshing your face while you sleep, helping to prevent fine lines and wrinkles. Well, it turns out that a satin pillowcase is also easier on your hair than other types of fabrics. Switching to satin can help prevent breakage and damage to your hair as you move your head in your sleep.
5. Get a Massage
I know, it sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? A scalp massage can help your hair grow thicker, stronger and longer. You don’t have to shell out the big bucks for a professional treatment, though you can if you want to. A simple 5-minute massage in the shower is perfect. Use the tips of your fingers and work in a circular motion over your entire head. Doing this daily is a great way to take good care of your hair.
6. Put It up
Wearing your hair up in the same style day after day isn’t good for it, but neither is leaving it down all the time. It’s a good idea to combine the two for a balance that will have you looking fabulous while also protecting your hair. Wearing your hair down exposes it to environmental toxins that can really do a number on it. Putting it in a ponytail, braid or bun now and then can protect much of your strands from damage. A good haircut every month or two can get rid of yucky ends.
7. Buy a Natural Bristle Brush
A natural bristle brush is way easier on your delicate hair than a synthetic one. You should for sure stay away from metal brushes, according to hair experts across the globe. Instead, go for a boar bristle or other natural material, which can help you tame your mane without worry of damage and breakage.
