7 Things to do before You Dye Your Hair ...

A new hair color can have a huge impact on you but there are so many things to do before you dye your hair. Dyeing your hair can be exhilarating, but there are a lot of risks that come along with it. After being a blonde for 20 years, I recently dyed my hair red. While I now love how it turned out, there are definitely some things to do before you dye your hair that I wish I had known before.

1 Ask Yourself Why

Before anything else, figure out what is compelling you to want to dye your hair. Is it because you want a new look? Is it because you want a change in your life? What color are you choosing and why? There are so many reasons to want to dye your hair, and knowing those reasons will help you in the process. Without this first step, the rest of the things to do before you dye your hair will make no difference.

Frequently asked questions

2 Pick a Color

This is kind of one of the obvious things to do before you dye your hair, but there is a lot going into picking the right color. Consider your skin and eye color to see what would complement you best. Think about what is going to come along with the color you want. Trust me, as a recently converted redhead, I had to prepare myself to be called “ginger” on a daily basis.

3 Do Some Research

Look up pictures of celebrities who have similar skin tones to you and see what looks best on them. It is important to have a sense of what you are getting into before you start to dye your hair. This is one of the most important things to do before you dye your hair because it will prepare you. Look into what kind of dye is the best and how to protect your color and make it last longer.

4 Pamper Your Hair

Dyeing your hair isn’t exactly the healthiest thing you can do. It might be a good idea to show your hair a little TLC and pamper it before throwing on the harsh chemicals. A deep conditioning mask is the perfect way to prep your hair. Masks with avocado and olive oil are especially good for your hair. This is definitely one of the things to do before you dye your hair to make sure that you have the softest and most beautiful hair possible.

5 Go a Few Shades Lighter

If there is one thing I have learned from dyeing my hair, it is that you will end up with a different color than what is on the box. As I am writing this, my hair is currently bright red even though the box said it would be strawberry blonde. Take this piece of advice into account when choosing a boxed brand of hair dye. Be ready to accept that you will end up with a color slightly darker than what it was supposed to be.

6 Buy More than You Need

With most things in life, it is better to have too much than too little. The last thing you want is to run out of dye halfway through and have an awkward part of your hair be two separate colors. It is better to be safe than sorry with this. So pick up two bottles instead of one. Worse comes to worst, you will have some left over to touch up any spots you missed.

7 Do a Strip Test

This is such an important part of dyeing you hair that so many people forget to do. Before completely dyeing your entire head, take a small strip of hair that can easily be hidden, and test the dye on that small piece. This will give you a realistic look at how the dye works with your hair and what the end result will be. You do not want to skip this step and end up with an outrageous hair color you hate.

Hopefully these steps will give you the best dye job possible. The most important thing to remember when dyeing your hair is that you are taking a risk and that nothing is permanent. If you take these steps, you should end up with the color you wanted. But even if not, there are always ways to fix a dye job. What do you think are some things to do before you dye your hair? What have been your experiences with dyeing your hair? Do you have any advice on how to go about dyeing your hair?
