8 Tips to Make Thin Hair Thicker ...

Not that my hair is terribly thin or anything, but I’m always looking for tips to make thin hair thicker. I mean, don’t we all want lush, thick hair? Luckily, I have the best stylist in the world (hi, Toni!), and she’s always got the best tips, ideas, advice, and even little product samples. I’ve been picking her brain for months, and now I’ve got a whole list of her tips on how to make thin hair thicker. Will I share? Of course! Here are 8 ways to make thin hair thicker.

1 Don’t over-brush

Contrary to the advice Gramma gave you, it’s never a good idea to brush your hair 100 strokes before bed each night. All that brushing won’t make thin hair thicker — it will just encourage breakage and split ends and other hair-thinning damage. Brush only as long as you need to in order to get the tangles out, and even then, use a good leave-in detangler before you brush.

2 Look out for SLES

Before you buy a new bottle of shampoo or conditioner, check the label to see if it contains sodium laureth sulfate, or sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES). If so, you may want to choose another, since these chemical compounds have been proven to cause scalp irritation and even allergic reactions resulting in — gasp! — hair loss! L’oreal has a new line of sulfate-free hair care products… if you want to make your thin hair a little thicker, give them a try!

3 Be Careful with Accessories

I can’t stress enough how important it is to use the right headbands, elastics, and pins in your hair if you’re wondering how to make thin hair thicker. Always make sure to use elastics and headbands that are cloth-covered, not plain rubber, to avoid hair breakage and damage. Also, don’t over-use these accessories! Always pulling your hair back into a ponytail can actually cause your hair to thin. If you find yourself always wanting to pull your hair back, maybe it’s time for a new style.

4 Comb with Care

How to handle wet hair when you’re looking for ways to make thin hair thicker? Apply plenty of conditioner every time you shampoo, then use a wide-tooth comb to comb it through to the ends before rinsing. When you get out of the shower, use that same wide-tooth comb to gently remove any tangles. There you go! Less hair damage, and thicker hair!

5 Use a Supplement

Supplements like Functionalab Hair, Skin & Nails are pricey (about $40 for a 3o-day supply), but they’re worth it to make thin hair thicker. Bonus: they also give you longer, stronger nails and gorgeous, glowing skin!

6 Go for the Mint

Make thin hair thicker by becoming a shampooing multi-tasker. Use a shampoo with mint or eucalyptus in it (my favorite is Aveda’s Rosemary Mint line) and gently massage into your scalp with your fingertips (but not your fingernails!). This will help stimulate hair growth, and it that mint or eucalyptus scent is invigorating!

7 Watch the Heat

Your blow dryer. Your curling iron. Your flat iron. All that heat can spell terrible damage for your hair. When possible, hair dry, rather than using a hair dryer, and if you must use your heated styling tools, invest in a good protective serum, like Oscar Blandi’s Pronto Dry Styling Heat Protect Spray.

8 Treat It!

I adore keratin! My stylist gives me a deep conditioning treatment with keratin every time I visit her, and I love how thick, gorgeous, and shiny my hair looks for days afterward! If you want to get that salon keratin treatment at home, try KeratinPerfect’s Perfect Treatment Smoothing Duo. It’s marvelous!

Never fear, my fellow thin-haired dear! With these tips, it’s completely possible to make thin hair thick… I know, I’ve tried all these ideas, and they work! It was especially hard for me to give up my daily ponytails, and it took some doing to remember to comb my hair with the conditioner in it, but I’m so glad I did! Which of these tips to make thin hair thick will you try to thicken your tresses? Or do you have another thin-to-thick idea to share?
