1 Ditch the Calorie Counting

If you count your calories everyday, chances are you’re not eating enough, so one of my first diet tips for thicker hair is to eat enough calories, and stop counting! Dieting is the worst thing you can do for your hair. Our body needs ample amounts of calories from healthy foods to look great, give us energy to move throughout the day, and yes, to keep our hair thick and strong. If you eat a low calorie diet, you’re most likely missing out on critical protein, healthy fat, and vitamin and mineral intake. Load up your diet with plenty of clean protein from mostly plants or organic animal products, healthy plant fats, and multitudes of vegetables and leafy greens. These foods are the absolute best foods you can eat that will thicken your hair and give you enough calories. When your diet is short on calories, your body is forced to use protein and collagen as fuel, which means your hair thins, your energy falls, and your muscles weaken. Stop counting, and start eating!

Frequently asked questions

2 Say No to Processed Food

Processed food is your hair’s enemy, along with your brain and body’s. For starters, it robs your body of nutrition from dietary vitamins and minerals. Processed foods are not absorbed into your body, no matter what their nutrition claims are. So, when you eat processed foods that market themselves as healthy, you’re actually just giving your body empty calories and wasted opportunities for real nutrients. Fill up on whole foods, which are rich in the best sources of protein, healthy carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats.

3 Focus on Protein

It’s also vital to focus on protein in your diet if you aren’t already. Protein is essential to healthy hair, skin, and nail growth. You want to focus on highly alkaline sources of protein when possible, to prevent collagen breakdown from acidic foods like meat, dairy, and poultry. These foods promote acidity all over the body, and are best to eat minimally. Acidic animal foods rob your body of nutrients and promote inflammation. Instead, fill up on alkaline sources of protein like hemp, chia, flax, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, avocados, leafy greens, and spirulina (a deep sea algae you can buy in pill or powder form). Protein is responsible for building collagen and keratin in your hair, so increasing your intake is a sure fire way to make sure your hair thickens fast. Some of my favorite ways are adding plant protein powder to a smoothie, adding more leafy greens and avocado to my salads, and being sure to include a few nuts and seeds in all my meals.

4 Eat Your Biotin

I’m sure you might have heard of hair, skin, and nail supplements to help your hair grow. These are a great option, and the reason is because they contain high amounts of biotin. Biotin is a B vitamin that is responsible for hair growth, along with other factors in your body. Biotin also helps to thicken your hair quickly, and it helps your nails grow quickly as well. The best way to get your biotin is through your food. Foods high in biotin include all nuts and seeds, oats, quinoa, brown rice, spirulina, eggs, and if you eat meat, fish and chicken are also good sources. Eating plenty of biotin rich foods will ensure you get plenty through your plate, but feel free to supplement if needed. A supplement of 5,000 mcg (5mg) is a good recommendation to start with for fast results.

5 Quit Caffeine

I know this one might surprise you, but did you know caffeine can actually hurt your hair growth and health? I’m mostly talking about caffeine from coffee, soda, energy drinks, black tea, and processed drinks. Green tea is the only exception here. Caffeine depletes your body of the nutrients that actually help increase the thickness of your hair. Caffeine causes the body to excrete B vitamins and beauty minerals like magnesium, potassium, and sulfur through the urine when you consume it. This means no amount of supplements in the world can help you if you’re drinking caffeine during the day. Eliminate caffeine from your diet and switch to herbal tea or green tea, which is lower in caffeine and contains a large amount of antioxidants.

6 Add Omegas

Omega 3 and omega 6 fats are critical to your hair’s health and quick growth. The best options for fast results include wild fish (not farmed), chia seeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, and flax seeds. Be sure to include fish two to three times a week, and the seeds above every single day for quick results. Omega 3s will help your hair thicken by plumping collagen restores in your hair. As a bonus, your skin will clear up, and your metabolism will also spike. These fats are your friend, so do not fear them, whatever you do!

7 ProVitamin a

ProVitamin A is the form of Vitamin A that is easily absorbed into your body. You might know it as beta-carotene under another name. Vitamin A helps restore skin, hair, and nail growth, in a very short amount of time. It can help reduce acne, help your nails grow, and it will strengthen your hair, helping it to become thicker in no time. The best food sources to include are: carrots, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, Swiss chard, spinach, kale, mango, apricot, papaya, tomatoes, peaches, and peppers. Eat as many of these foods as you can each day and your hair and skin will improve in a very short amount of time.

Eating for your hair isn’t only easy, but quite tasty too! I hope some of these tips have helped you, and if you have a dietary tip for thicker hair, feel free to share it below! What’s your favorite healthy hair tip?
