1. Avoid Sodium Laureth Sulphate

Sodium Laureth Sulphate is notorious for causing a reaction. Unfortunately, it´s in just about every shampoo on the market. When I was researching how to help an itchy scalp for myself, I read about SLS, and decided to look for a shampoo that did not contain it. The results have been very effective. No more itch!

2. Oils

If you´re into alternative remedies, and prefer to avoid using harsh chemical products, try treating your itchy scalp with oils. You can use tea tree, lavender or eucalyptus oil, but do remember that if using essential oils (i.e., concentrated ones), they must be diluted. Olive oil and coconut oil are also worth trying.

Frequently asked questions

3. Relax

Some believe that an itchy scalp is caused by anxiety. You scratch because of the itch, which makes the condition worse, so you scratch more … vicious circle. If you have stress in your life (and most of us do), it´s worth trying relaxation techniques to see if that helps.

4. Head Lice

Just seeing the words is enough to make you itch! Head lice are a very common cause of an itchy scalp, especially among children. However, it can also happen to adults, and it has nothing to do with a lack of cleanliness. You can try treatments from the drugstore or natural alternativess such as tea tree oil, but if the problem doesn´t clear up see your doctor for a prescription treatment.

5. Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera is awesome for skin conditions and itching. If you have a plant, you just need to break off a leaf and apply the aloe vera directly to your scalp. Or you can buy the gel in tubes. Leave on your scalp for 10 minutes before rinsing off.

6. Baking Soda

Baking soda is another natural – and very cheap – solution to itching. It´s good for insect bites, among other things. To treat an itchy scalp, make a paste with baking soda and water, and leave for 30 mins before rinsing. Do NOT answer the door during this time!

7. Diet

Your diet can also be a source of ways to help your itchy scalp. Zinc and iron are good for hair, as are vitamins A, B and C. Also include essential fatty acids, which can be found in fish like salmon and tuna, as well as flax seeds and walnuts.

8. Herbal Cures

Rosemary isn´t just tasty in cooking, it´s great for hair health as well. Make an infusion of rosemary and camomile, using camomile tea bags and some sprigs of rosemary. Leave to cool, strain to remove the rosemary sprigs, and use as a rinse after shampooing.

Now I´ve shown you how to help an itchy scalp, hopefully this irritating problem will be a thing of the past! You may have to try various tactics before you hit on the one that works for you. Do you know any effective and natural ways of dealing with an itchy scalp?

sometimes I have an itchy scalp but it's always in the same spot (right where a cowlick would be if I had one). Nothing really helps so I just resist the scratching lol

I struggle with this a lot. I have very thick dark hair. I've found different things work at different times. One of the biggest helps has been a shampoo with peppermint & rosemary in it. One theory I've heard is that yeast over grows in the hair follicles and causes an itch. Peppermint & rosemary fight against the yeast. Also a big help is eliminateing most refined sugar from my diet. Again a yeast thing. And finally making sure I rinse ALL the soap out of my thick hair and scrub real well.

Is the same for men???? My Diddy has this really really bad itchy scalp!!!
