I’m always looking for hairstyles that don't require heat. In high school I flat ironed my hair every morning and washed in every night so my hair was fried, dry and brittle. Plus, it took a year to grow out and while I was growing it out I had to find other ways to style my hair. Here are some hairstyles that don't require heat that I used in the past.

1. Classic Ponytail
I had to include ponytails because it is one of the most basic hairstyles that don't require heat. Ponytails are foolproof, plus you can always mix it up a little. My favourite is teasing the crown on my hair and then pulling my hair in to a high ponytail. I call this the Cheerleader look – it’s bouncy, youthful and flirty!
2. Ballerina Bun
Also known as the «sock bun», the ballerina bun is sophisticated, chic and appropriate for day or night. Today, a lot of stores like Forever 21 carry «sock bun elastics» for fairly cheap. However, you can even save yourself the $4 and use an old sock (hence the name sock bun). Take a clean sock and completely cut the first two inches off the toe-end. Besides a «doughnut elastic», a hair tie and a brush you don’t need anything else.

3. Trendy Fishtail
A step up from a regular braid where the hair is divided in to three pieces, the fishtail requires that the hair be divided into several strands. The fishtail is easy to execute and is very romantic and sweet looking in my opinion. This is also another look that’s great for both the day and night.
4. Heatless Curls
Another easy way to style your hair is heatless curls. Take a shower an hour to two hours before you plan to go to sleep - shampoo and condition your hair as usual. Rather than blow drying your hair, let your hair air dry. When your hair is only a little damp, head to bed but leave your hair open. When you wake up in the morning you’ll have messy, loose curls.
5. Afro
If you’re experimenting with new hairdos or are just bold in your hair styles, the afro is perfect for you. Any hair type can achieve the afro without head or chemicals required. However, it takes a lot of time and patience to achieve.
6. Sleek Low Ponytail
Like I said earlier, the ponytail is great because there are so many variations. However, I decided to create the sleek low ponytail as its own point. This is a very chic look that has been seen on fashion runways several times including Valentino’s fall 2013 runway show at Paris fashion week. All you need is hair crème to smooth down your hair and any frizz, pull your hair is a low ponytail and take half an inch worth of hair strands to wrap around the base of your ponytail to hide the elastic and voila you’re done.
7. Au Natural
The best way to style your hair without any fuss or extra products is to wear your hair down as is! It’s the healthiest way to wear your hair. However, if you don’t like your hair without product, add some accessories to distract from your hair like a headscarf or a hair brooch.
I always recommend staying away from heat as much as possible – in fact I don’t even own a hair dryer myself and only style my hair with heat 2-3 times a month. The less you fuss with your hair and the more you let it be in its natural state, the easier you’ll find it is to style without heat. What are your favourite hairstyles that don’t require heat?
