1. Clean Hair

You want to start out with clean hair in order to get a great curl. I've always heard it said that you want dirty hair to get a good hold but that's not really true. Greasy, oily hair won't hold a curl like clean hair will. So make sure your hair is clean before you start curling it. If you need a little oil in your hair to keep it from being wispy, second day hair is usually still clean enough to hold a curl without being fly-away.

2. Hot Rollers

I've used just about every curling iron and every type of hot rollers out there and I have to say I can't recommend one over the other. It totally depends on your mood and what type of curl you're going for as to which you should use. Short hair does best with a curling iron, long hair can do either. Thick hair does better with hot rollers because you can fit more hair onto a roller and you can leave them in your hair longer for a better curl. Rollers can also give you more volume than a curling iron. But curling irons can often be faster to use then a set of rollers.

Frequently asked questions

Honestly, a little bit of 'dirty' hair tends to hold curls better. Freshly washed hair can be too silky and might not keep the shape as well.

You don't have to wash it right before curling. If your hair is too clean, it might be slippery. A day or two after washing can be ideal.

Yep, you can! A bit of oil can actually help hold the curl better. Just make sure it’s not too oily; dry shampoo can work wonders!

Absolutely! Different textures react differently. Fine hair might need more product for hold, while thicker hair might not need as much.

Try using a styling product before curling, like a mousse or heat protectant. And remember, hair that isn't freshly washed usually holds styles better!

3. Teasing

If you want a lot of body to your hair, curling it will definitely give you extra body! But for even MORE body, tease your hair after you curl it. Be gentle, you don't want to wreck the ends of your hair, but if you tease the roots, you'll get a great lift and a fantastic big sexy hair style! Don't be afraid to overdo it, just do be careful when you start combing it out.

Teasing your hair can be a great way to add extra body and lift to your curls. It's important to be gentle when you're teasing your hair, as you don't want to damage the ends. Start by sectioning off the top layer of your hair and use a fine-toothed comb to tease the roots. Work your way up and back, using gentle strokes. Once you have achieved the desired amount of lift, use a brush to smooth the top layer.

When it comes to styling your curls, it's important to use a heat protectant product before you start styling. This will help protect your hair from heat damage and will ensure your curls stay bouncy and healthy. You can also use a curl enhancer or mousse to help define your curls.

When you're finished curling and teasing your hair, you can use hairspray to help hold the style in place. It's important to use a light-hold hairspray that won't make your hair stiff. You can also use a serum or oil to keep your curls looking hydrated and shiny.

4. Layers

Layers are an absolute must for getting a good curl that will hold all day. Don't get me wrong, you can still curl your hair if you don't have any layers but it will probably fall out by the end of the day. The weight of your hair will pull it out. Ask your stylist to five you some layers all over your head for bouncy curls that will last all day AND all night. Hey, a girl's gotta party!

5. Type of Curl

Keep in mind there are many different types of curls. There are waves, there are tight curls, there are curls only on the ends, there are banana curls....many different types to choose from. If you only want the ends curled, start at the bottom of your hair and roll it all the way up to the scalp. If you want a curl that starts from the scalp, start about mid-shaft and gently pull the hair up as you go. The size of your curl will depend on the size barrel on your curling iron. Smaller barrels make smaller curls and vice versa. If you crave waves, use a large barrel and curl large sections of your hair then shake it out.

6. Product

If you want your curl to last any amount of time at all, you will need to use some product. I like to apply mousse and volumizing spray to my wet hair and allow it to dry. Then I spray heat protectant all over each piece of my hair and sometimes I then use a curl spray. It just depends on how long I need my look to last for. I always end with a spritz of hairspray for all day hold. Find products that are designed for your hair type and the look you are going for and go from there!

One of the most important steps in curling your hair is selecting the right product. Depending on the type of curl you are aiming for, the product you use can make a big difference. For example, if you are looking for tight curls, you should look for products that provide more hold. If you want more of a beachy wave look, then you should look for products that provide more texture and definition.

When it comes to product selection, it is important to consider your hair type. For instance, if you have fine or thin hair, then you should choose light-weight products that won’t weigh down your hair. On the other hand, if you have thick or coarse hair, then you should look for products that are designed to provide more hold.

In addition, you should also consider the type of curl you are trying to achieve. For example, if you are looking for loose curls, then you should look for products that provide more volume and texture. If you are looking for tight curls, then you should look for products that provide more hold.

7. Style

What kind of style are you going for? If you plan to leave your hair down you need to take a little extra attention and time and make sure your curls are perfect. When you put your hair up, it doesn't fall out as easily so you don't have to be as picky with the curls. Never brush your curls out. Always use your fingers or a pick, and wait until they are completely cooled down before you touch them. This gives them a chance to set. Remember that as the day wears on, your curls will fall out a little, so start out with small curls and by evening you'll end up with larger ringlets.

When it comes to curling your hair, there are a few key things to keep in mind. First, it’s important to decide what kind of style you’re going for. If you’re looking to wear your hair down, you’ll need to take extra care with your curls to make sure they look perfect. When you’re putting your hair up, you don’t need to be as precise, as it won’t easily fall out.

When styling your curls, it’s important to remember to never brush them out. Instead, use your fingers or a pick, and make sure to wait until your curls have completely cooled down before touching them. This will allow them to set in the shape you’ve created. Additionally, keep in mind that as the day goes on, your curls will naturally fall out a bit. To combat this, start out with small curls and you’ll end up with larger ringlets by the evening.

8. Humidity

If you have naturally wavy or curly hair, bravo! It will be easier for your to curl your hair and your style will probably last longer. But you probably have a battle with humidity everyday. If this is the case, curling your hair on a humid day may prove fatal! But.......there IS something you can do! Apply a smoothing serum to your hair and straighten it after it's dry. From there, you can curl it. Straightening your hair smoothes down the cuticle, and the smoothing serum will lock in that frizz fighting power so your curls will be shiny and non-frizzy!
