Maintaining gorgeous, healthy hair requires intentional care, even while you sleep! Especially if you have processed locks like most of us do, taking the time to wash, condition, oil and protect your hair is a no-brainer. But when comes to your sleep habits regarding your hair, often times it's thrown up in a bun and that's it! There's more to it than that but here's exactly what you shouldn't be doing with your hair at night! 🚫🙅🏼😴
1. Sleeping on an Old, Cotton Pillowcase 🙈💤
Cotton is soft and cozy and great for bedsheets! Unfortunately, cotton isn't so great for your hair at night. It tugs on your hair when you toss and turn, causing breakage and dryness. It's best to eliminate that friction and go for a silk pillowcase or scarf to wrap your hair up in.
2. Going to Bed with Wet Hair 💁🏽💦
I'm totally guilty of this! especially when my hair is shorter, it's so easy to shower at night and just crawl in bed with wet hair. But this is a terrible habit! Not only does your hair suck in the morning, requiring more heat styling than usual, but its potential for damage increases. Wet hair is plyable and can easily break-add that to tossing and turning all night and you can see the problem!
3. Using Metal Hair Ties 😩
Metal hair ties are terrible for your hair. Most of them are now eliminated from stores but you might still have them around. Metal hair ties snag, pull on, and breaks hair. Even skinny elastic hair bands are not a good option for night time- instead, opt for small, soft scrunchy bands!
4. A Tight Updo 🙆🏾
Wearing your hair too tight is simply uncomfortable. Fly-aways pop out, it can give you a headache, and can cause your skin to become dry with the tension. Worse yet, constant pulling at your hair line with a tight hair style can stimulate hair loss! Yikes!
5. Forgetting to Brush out Your Hair 🐰
It's important to brush your hair regularly, especially at night. Get out all the tangles first and brush from root to ends with a natural fiber brush. It keeps your hair free of tangles and distributes your hair's natural oils while you sleep!
6. Not Tying Back Your Hair 👩🏼
Unless you have super short hair, leaving it down while you sleep is not a good idea. Breakage, knots, hair in faces, up noses, etc...not pretty! So, remember to keep it up in a loose bun or soft braid.
7. Your Room is Too Dry ✨🤔
The culprit for your dry skin and hair could just be the humidity levels of your room! Keep a humidifier by your bed while you sleep and you skin and hair will absorb a little extra moisture. It's also good for your lungs!
