1. Start with Damp Hair
One of the first tips for the perfect beach hair is to start with damp hair. Whether that means actually taking a quick dip into the pool, ocean or just washing it in the shower, you’re going to need damp hair to work with. If you’re in a rush, you can always use a spray water bottle. I love the Evian Mineral Water Spray. It’s a must have for hair and makeup artists.
2. Product
Here’s where it gets fancy. There are a number of products out on the market right now to help you attain beach hair such as: Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, Sedu Beach Beauty Sea Salt Spray and Healthy Sexy Hair Beach Spray. All of them are great but if you’re looking to save a penny…
you might consider a more DIY approach. Mix your own salt water spray by combining a teaspoon of sea salt and a few drops of coconut oil with a cup of warm water. Add it to a spray bottle, give it a shake, and voila – your homemade concoction for that effortless, wavy look. Just be sure to condition your hair well, as salt can be drying. If you have naturally dry hair, try less salt in your mixture or use it sparingly. This way, you can rock those tousled waves without breaking the bank.

3. Make Your Own Spray
Make you own at-home beach spray by boiling some purified water and then adding some sea salt (about a 1 tsp. per 8 oz. of water). Then add a ½ tsp. of conditioner. Go for something tropical like coconut and then add a dab of hair gel. Go for the cheaper ones. They’re runnier and tend to work better. Put in a spray bottle and shake together!
4. Applying
Spray from the tips of your hair to the root. If you have oily hair make sure to add a little bit more. It’ll help with the absorption of the oil and if you have drier hair be sure to add a little less spray. You don’t want to dry out your hair.
5. Drying
Take a diffuser if you have one and attach it to your hair dryer and set to low. If you don’t have a diffuser, take a wash cloth and grip the hair at the bottom and scrunch up. Hold your dryer close to the opening of the hair and keep drying for ten seconds each scrunch. Make sure to keep your head flipped downward while you’re doing this. Keep going around your head until the hair is dry or almost dry.
6. Styling
As much as I’d love to say you’re done, a curling iron usually has to come into play to manage any unruly strands. Using a 1-½ inch barrel curling iron (I love Hot Tools curling irons), take small one-inch sections and wrap the hair around the iron holding the tip at the end.
7. Finishing
Use your fingers to part any curls to create soft waves. You can lightly run smoothing milk, serum or mousse through your hair and scrunch up or mist with a little aerosol hair spray and go. If you’re looking for huge beach hair, rat at the root with a fine-toothed comb and at the ends of your curls.
