There is a method you need to follow to have a good deep conditioning treatment for your hair. It involves a lot more than just applying and rinsing out. If you truly want to get the most out of a deep conditioning treatment for your hair, these steps can help you to do that. You are sure to notice the difference when you take the time to do a deep conditioning treatment correctly instead of rushing through it.
1. Choose the Right Product
There is no way you are going to get a good deep conditioning treatment for your hair if you don’t shop for the right product. Everyone has different hair needs. The trick is to find the right deep conditioner for your hair needs. There are good deep conditioners across the board, from drugstore brands to salon brands. My favorites are Aussie’s Three Minute Miracle and It’s a 10 Miracle Hair Mask.
2. Wash Your Hair
This is an obvious but necessary step. Deep conditioner needs hair that is clean to work well. Sometimes people just wet their hair rather than washing it before deep conditioning it. It doesn’t really matter what shampoo you use as long as your hair is clean when you apply the product to it. Make sure you rinse all the shampoo out thoroughly.
3. Apply the Product Correctly
As you apply the conditioner, concentrate on the ends of your hair, where the majority of any damage will be concentrated. A lot of us make the mistake of applying conditioner or deep conditioner to our hair by rubbing it over it. This is the wrong technique. What we really need to do is finger comb the conditioner through our hair so that it can fully penetrate all of it. It is also acceptable to use a shower comb to move the product through. Leave the conditioner on your hair.
4. Heat a Damp Towel
This is the magic step. Heat a damp towel in the microwave for fifteen to twenty seconds and wrap it around your head turban style. This will help the deep conditioner work better. It makes such a difference in how your deep conditioner works. It activates it in a whole new way.
5. Wait 10-15 Minutes
Allow the deep conditioner to work. Most deep conditioners recommend that you allow them three to five minutes to condition your hair. Allowing them double that time to work is very beneficial. It works even better when you allow the damp towel to close in the conditioner and do its job. Go about doing whatever you need to do while the conditioner does what it needs to do.
6. Rinse Carefully
When the 10-15 minutes are up, it is time to rinse the deep conditioner out of your hair. A lot of us make a mistake here, too. We rinse our hair too fully. While you want to rinse the deep conditioner, you also want to leave just a little behind. So rinse your hair but not quite as long as you normally would.
7. Give Your Hair the Day off
After a deep conditioning treatment, your hair is going to have a different feel to it. It may feel softer or weighed down a little bit. This is normal after a deep conditioning treatment. It is best to just let your hair have the day off when you deep condition it. I usually choose to do this on a day when I will be home and don’t need to style it as usual.
There are a lot of ways that you can use a deep conditioner but this way is the way that works best for me. What about you? What little tricks have you found to get the most out of your deep conditioner?
