1. Conditioning
I don’t know about you, but I like my hair to be super smooth. I used to put tons of conditioner over my whole head, but found it made it super greasy. If you have the same problem, a trick is to avoid your roots when you use it. I try to keep the product to the middle and ends of my hair, which really helps cut down on the oil.
2. Dry Skin
It seems weird that dry skin would make your hair oilier, but it’s true! Your skin will actually produce more grease when it’s dry because it is trying to moisturize itself. I always make sure that my water isn’t too hot and I try to buy moisturizing shampoos to combat the dryness!

3. Too Many Products
We all have our go-to products for our hair-care routine, but if you use too many, it could be the reason for your oily strands. Hairspray and other leave in treatments can build up and cause your hair too look greasier. I try to apply as little product as possible, but if I feel like I need it, then I make sure to thoroughly wash it out that night, so it doesn’t keep building up.
4. Over-Washing
Washing your hair every day should get rid of all that excess oil, right? Wrong. This is another way that your scalp becomes dry, resulting in more oil being produced. A great way that I avoid so many washes is to use dry shampoo. I just work it into my roots and it keeps it looking cleaner longer, without the grease!
5. Brushing
It can be hard to resist the urge to comb your hair several times a day, but doing so can actually make it oilier! By brushing your hair, the grease from the roots is moved throughout your whole head. I try and stick to combing my hair only a few times a day, and I avoid my roots when doing so.
6. Being Unhealthy
When we aren’t feeling our best, our hair is probably not going to look it’s best. Stress and other factors can play a role in the production of oils (just like we seem to break out more during certain times). I try and make sure I get plenty of sleep and find ways to relax. It keeps my hair looking good and has tons of other benefits too!
7. Dirty Styling Tools
It’s actually crazy to think about, but when is the last time you washed your hairbrush? It’s easy to remember to wash your hair, but not so much the tools that you use on it. Oils and dirt are easily transferred from these items, so I always try to clean them as much as possible.
These are just some of the ways grease sneaks onto our scalp – but now you know what to do if it does! If you have other tips, feel free to share, and thanks for reading!
