1. Comb or Brush

The first of the steps to the perfect braid bun is to prep your hair. Comb or brush it so that it’s smooth and easy to work with. It will be much easier to get the braid in if you aren’t battling tangles and flyaways. You can also dampen your hair just a bit if that makes it easier to style.

2. Make a Ponytail

The next thing you want to do is gather your hair in a ponytail. For a back bun, it should be in the center of the back of your head. Make the ponytail on the side if you want a side bun. If you prefer a high top bun, put the ponytail a bit higher on your head. Secure your ponytail with a hair elastic to keep it in place.

3. Braid the Bun

Next, separate your ponytail into three even sections. Braid the sections together until you get to the end of your ponytail. Secure the braid at the end with a small elastic. This helps keep the braid in as you finish the hairstyle and prevents you from having to take it out and make repairs throughout the day.

4. Wrap the Braid

Now, take the braid and wrap it around the ponytail elastic at the top of your ponytail. Make sure you cover that elastic so it doesn’t show. You can make the bun as loose or tight as you like. For a more casual look, pull a few tendrils out of the braid before you wrap it.

5. Hold Everything in Place

Use a bobby pin or small clip to hold the end of the bun around your ponytail elastic. Make sure that whatever you choose to secure your bun is tight enough that it won’t slip all day, but not so tight that your hairstyle gives you a headache. I like bobby pins because you can push them into your hair so they aren’t super obvious.

6. Apply Product

If your hair is anything like mine, it needs a little help to stay in place for an entire day. This is the time to add some hairspray to hold your bun where you want it. Don’t use so much that you get that dreaded crunchy look though. Just a couple of spritzes of hairspray is usually enough to do the trick.

7. Embellish

This step is optional, but can really make a braid bun your own. Add a bow, ribbon or a couple of cute barrettes to your hairstyle to give it some unique personality. One of the cutest trends is to put a bow clip on the underside of your bun. I like a cute flower clip for a side bun.

Do you like a braid bun? It’s such an easy and cute hairstyle that works for so many occasions. Do you think you’ll give it a try?
