7 Questions You Must Ask Your New Hairstylist before She Gets Started ...

By Eliza

There are questions you must ask your hairstylist or you might be sorry. It’s especially important to quiz a new stylist if you’ve decided to make a switch. I’m sure you’ve suffered through a terrible cut or color that could have been avoided with the right questions. I know I have – to the tune of dark purple hair when I asked for subtle red highlights. Check out these questions you must ask your hairstylist and you’ll be ready before you get in the chair.

1 What’s a Good Cut for My Hair Type?

No matter how much you love a haircut or style, it might not mesh with your hair type. This is one of the most important questions you must ask your hairstylist because certain styles work best with certain hair types and might look terrible on others. Some stylists will just give you the cut you ask for regardless, so be sure to ask before she wields the scissors so you can pick something else if you need to.

Frequently asked questions

2 Will It Flatter My Face Shape?

Just like a certain style will look best with a certain hair type, some cuts complement specific face shapes better than others. When choosing a style, consider your face shape compared to the face of the model you’re looking at. That way, you have a pretty good idea of how it will look. However, ask your stylist for her opinion and you might just avoid making a mistake.

3 What Products do You Recommend?

There are so many hair products out there that it can be completely overwhelming to make a choice. Your stylist has all the knowledge and know how when it comes to picking what will work best for you. Ask her what shampoo, conditioner, styling products and nourishing items she recommends for your hair, and you’ll be ready for anything and you’ll look great too!

4 What Are Your Qualifications?

Everyone has to start somewhere, but if you have specific desires or special hair issues, it pays to find someone who has some experience dealing with those things. For example, I have pretty thin hair so I need layers to give it volume. I wouldn’t think of getting a cut or style from someone who wasn’t aware of how to do that. Ask your stylist if she’s ever worked with your hair type before she gets started.

5 How Long Will It Take to Style?

No matter how much you love it, some styles are high maintenance and may require more than you are willing to give. Before getting the cut, ask your stylist how long the look will take to reproduce at home. Sure, she can get it done quickly, but it may take you some time to get into the groove.

6 When Should I Wash?

Many people don’t need to wash their hair every day. You might be one of them and you can find out for sure by asking your stylist. She can tell how often your type and texture should be cleaned for the best appearance and styling results. You might find out that you wash too often or not enough, and changing your routine can make the all the difference.

7 What Color Should I Choose?

Specific skin tones play a role in the best hair colors. You don’t want to follow in my footsteps and end up with a crayon colored head of hair. If only I had asked...take a clue from my experience and ask your stylist which color would look best on you. That way you walk away with a look you love instead of having to sob in the car for a while afterward.

What do you ask your stylist? Will you ask any of these questions next time?
